We welcome you to our newest interview in our weekly series. Here we interview each week somebody from the community and learn a bit more about their lives. This week, from Anaheim, USA:
Margrit Aronsohn, a 73-year-old resident of Anaheim, California, is a woman with deep connections to her Swiss heritage. Born and raised in the serene town of Benken, nestled in the canton of St. Gallen, Margrit spent the first three decades of her life in Switzerland. However, love and marriage led her across the globe to her current home in Southern California over 40 years ago. Despite the distance, Margrit maintains a strong bond with her family and friends back in Switzerland.
What is your name and where are you living now?
My name is Margrit Aronsohnand I live in Anaheim, California.
What is your connection to Switzerland? Have you been born there, or do you have some roots in Switzerland?
I was born and raised in a small town called Benken in the canton of St. Gallen. I lived there my first 29 years of my life. Love and marriage brought me to this corner of the world. I just celebrated my 73rd birthday which means that I have lived here in southern California for over 40 years. I still have very close ties to my family and some friends in Switzerland and return there for a visit at least once a year.
What is the thing that you miss about Switzerland the most?
What I miss most about Switzerland besides my family are the mountains and the Swiss culture, like their music and folk dances as well as the cheeses and the chocolates, especially the chocolate kisses.
What do you think is better or do you like more in your new country?
What I like about my host country is the mild climate of Southern California. I also like the vast variety of entertainment, even for seniors. I have also gotten used to everything being big and I feel like people here are more tolerant and more open minded.
Do you have any plans of returning soon? For vacations or permanently.
Returning to live in Switzerland has always been an option for me since day one, but as of yet I was never able to make the change since I love both countries. My life is here, my family is there. But who knows what the future holds!
